Watch setting

I heard someone say something darkly true: “Anyone more religious than you is fanatical; anyone less religious than you is profane.”

This same principle can be applied to just about any attempt at balance. Wherever we set our mean is the zero point between deficit and excess.

I say “set our mean” but in most cases, the mean is set for us. However far our group drifts, there we are. We read the news to calibrate our sense of normal. For the average intelligent citizen of wherever, whether that paper is the New York Times, Berliner Tageblatt or Pravda is purely an accident of place and time.
